The AA battery is the most widely used battery in the world, found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for AA batteries and HR6 alkaline for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage for these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries typically deliver 1.2V. Newer AA lithium batteries offer a much higher capacity at a slightly higher price. Introduced in 1907, the AA battery size was standardized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, though it was used for some time in flashlights and electrical novelties prior to formal standardization. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature use different designations for cells of this size, depending on cell characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery is 51 mm long and 14 mm in diameter. AA batteries are available in the following formats: alkaline, salt, long-life lithium, and rechargeable batteries with varying capacities. AA alkaline batteries have a shelf life of approximately 6 years, while AA lithium equivalents can last up to 9 years before use. AA rechargeable batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850 mAh and also come in a new "pre-charged" technology, allowing you to use them straight from the packaging.
