The AA battery is the most widely used battery in the world and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 alkaline batteries for AA batteries and HR6 alkaline batteries for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage of these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries typically deliver 1.2V. Newer AA lithium batteries offer significantly higher capacity at a slightly higher price. The size of the AA battery, introduced in 1907, was standardized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but it had been in use in flashlights and electrical novelties for some time before the official standardization. ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature specifies several designations for cells of this size, depending on the cell's characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery is 51 mm long and 14 mm in diameter. The formats in which AA batteries are available are: alkaline batteries, salt batteries, long-life lithium batteries, and rechargeable batteries of varying capacities. AA alkaline batteries have a shelf life of approximately 6 years, while AA lithium equivalents can last up to 9 years before use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850 mAh and are also available with new "pre-charged" technology, allowing you to use them straight from the packaging.
