The AA battery is the most widely used battery in the world and can be found in hundreds of thousands of devices. IEC codes for AA batteries include the popular LR6 for alkaline AA batteries and HR6 for rechargeable NiMH batteries. The standard voltage of these batteries is 1.5V, while rechargeable batteries generally deliver 1.2V. Newer AA lithium batteries offer significantly higher capacity at a slightly higher price.
The AA battery size, introduced in 1907, was standardized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1947, but had already been used in flashlights and other electrical novelties for some time before the official standardization. The ANSI and IEC battery nomenclature use different designations for cells of this size, depending on the cell's characteristics and chemistry. Each AA battery is 51 mm long and has a diameter of 14 mm.
AA batteries are available in various formats, including alkaline, salt, long-life lithium, and rechargeable batteries of different capacities. Alkaline AA batteries have a shelf life of approximately 6 years, while lithium AA batteries can last up to 9 years before needing use. Rechargeable AA batteries are now available in NiMH with capacities up to 2850 mAh and also feature new "pre-charged" technology, allowing for immediate use after unpacking.
